Policy Provisions
1.

Leave of Absence

Should a student wish to take a fall or spring term off from school, then the student should apply for a Leave of Absence. A Leave of Absence must be requested prior to the "W" deadline for that semester (approximately six weeks into regularly scheduled courses). When official, a Leave of Absence is granted, students need not apply for readmission. To be approved for a Leave of Absence, a student's cumulative GPA must be 2.00 or higher. A student who requests a Leave of Absence, but whose cumulative GPA is below a 2.00 will be completely withdrawn from the institution.  A student receiving a leave of absence will remain under the academic requirements of the catalog in effect when initially enrolled.

1.1

Leave of Absence--dropping any future courses that conflict with requested leave.

If a student discontinues enrollment from the Cumberland University (whether voluntarily or not), re-entry for future semesters may be contingent on satisfying conditions outlined by the Office of Enrollment Services and/or the Office of Academic Affairs.  Students previously withdrawn from the university will be subject to the academic requirements of the catalog in effect when they are readmitted.  It is required that you discuss your leave status and coursework with your academic advisor prior to leaving campus or the online program. If you plan to take courses elsewhere while on leave, you must seek official permission to do so through the Office of Academic Affairs via the University Registrar.

1.2

Important note for financial aid recipients

For purposes of an approved Leave of Absence under federal Title IV financial aid regulations, the student's Leave of Absence must not exceed a total 180 days, when added to all other Leaves of Absence in any 12-month period. If a student who has received federal Title IV loans (Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loans) does not return from an approved Leave of Absence, some or all of the repayment deferral period may be exhausted, and loans may go into repayment. For purposes of the Title IV programs, the date of withdrawal is backdated to the first day of the approved Leave of Absence. This policy also includes students who do not return from an approved leave for study abroad. Federal student loan recipients who are considering a Leave of Absence are encouraged to visit with a financial aid counselor prior to applying for a leave to review the impact of a leave on loan repayment.
