Our MAE program is focused on the study of pedagogy and other topics related to teaching, learning, and schooling. We do not offer courses at the Master's level in subject area material. If a candidate seeks an initial teacher's license through the MAE, they must demonstrate adequate mastery of subject material by passing the content area exam related to their intended licensure (attached list).
The list of Praxis II Content Area tests below is only those required of MAE Track II candidates BY CUMBERLAND UNIVERSITY for the MAE Teacher Licensure program - Track II. Do not confuse this for the list of exams required for your intended type of licensure. For licensure, all candidates must pass a Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam, and one or more other content area exams.
Track II Applicants interested in Student Teaching at the end of their MAE program must pass the appropriate Praxis II content area exam listed below for the type of licensure they seek prior to completing two semesters of their MAE Track II coursework. Candidates may register on-line for exams with a credit card by going to the University website. Other details about Praxis exams can be found at the Praxis webpage of the Educational Testing Service.
Failure to do so will mean the candidate will not be permitted to student teach. Candidates may opt to change to Track I and complete the degree without licensure.
The names of the exams contain links to information about the exams (PDF required).
For a list of all praxis exams required by the State of Tennessee for licensure, go to the University website.
*Program approval by the State Department of Teacher Licensure and Accreditation is conditionally approved. Please see a faculty member in the School of Education and Public Service for details regarding this program.
