Policy Provisions
1.

When Prior Authorization is Required to Offer Directed Studies to Online Students


If:  (a) the online student requires a course that is a part of his or her degree program; (b) the student would be eligible to graduate at the end of the term but for the course; (c) the course has not been developed; and (d) there are seven (7) or less students who are enrolled in the course that particular term --  then no prior authorization is required in order to offer the course to the student via directed studies.

 

If:  (a) the online student requires a course that is a part of his or her degree program; (b) the student would be eligible to graduate at the end of the term but for the course; (c) the course has been developed; and (d) there are three (3) or less students who are enrolled in the course that particular term --  then no prior authorization is required in order to offer the course to the student via directed studies.  In the event there are between three (3) and seven (7) students enrolled in the course, the Program Director shall contact the Vice President for Online Studies to discuss whether directed studies would protect the academic goals and integrity of the course and the University’s financial resources.  Prior authorization with the appropriate justification is required to offer the program to between 3 and 7 students via directed studies.  Directed studies is not appropriate for courses with 7 or more students enrolled.  Nothing herein shall prohibit or discourse the use of directed studies for a particular student when such modality is necessitated as a reasonable accommodation to a disability, in which case an academic appeal shall be utilized to procure the necessary acknowledgements and consents.
