Members of the faculty of Cumberland University are granted academic freedom to follow the quest for truth and to interpret their understanding of that truth to students. They shall be free to speak, write, or act as citizens without institutional censorship or discipline with the understanding, however, that as academic stewards of the University, they should remember that the public may judge their professions and the institution by their utterances; hence, they should at all times be accurate, they should show respect for the opinions of others, they should exercise appropriate restraint, and they should make every effort to indicate that they do not speak for the University. Faculty can provide divergent and challenging views without imposing ones own personal views. Faculty should at all times be supportive of Cumberland University Mission.
